Amazon’s AI Shake-Up: VP Exit Sparks Questions About Future in Competitive Tech Race.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is undergoing significant leadership changes with the departure of Baskar Sridharan, Vice President of AI/ML Services and Data Services & Infrastructure. Sridharan, who played a pivotal role in developing AWS’s flagship AI products like Bedrock and SageMaker, is leaving following a recent reorganization within the company. 

Leadership Transition and Organizational Restructuring

Sridharan joined Amazon in May 2024 after a distinguished career at Google Cloud and Microsoft. His exit coincides with AWS’s strategic restructuring aimed at enhancing its AI capabilities. The reorganization includes the formation of a new Agentic AI team, now led by Swami Sivasubramanian, who reports directly to AWS CEO Matt Garman. Consequently, the Bedrock and SageMaker teams will transition under the AWS Compute division, overseen by Vice President Dave Brown. Additionally, Prasad Kalyanaraman will lead several networking teams, and Mai-Lan Tomsen Bukovec will manage certain data service units. The Q chatbot teams are set to integrate into the Agentic AI group.

Sridharan’s departure is part of a series of high-profile exits from AWS, including former CEO Adam Selipsky, CMO Raejeanne Skillern, CFO Richard Puccio, and AI VP Matt Wood over the past year. These changes occur as Amazon faces intense competition in the AI sector, with rivals like Google and OpenAI making significant advancements. Despite these challenges, AWS remains committed to strengthening its position in the AI industry. In an internal communication, CEO Matt Garman expressed optimism, stating that the new Agentic AI team has the potential to build Amazon’s “next multi-billion-dollar … .”
